I know that P is for Pylon, L for Line and F for Fail. What does the M next to a time signify?

M = maximum

Under the standard autotest regs, the maximum time anyone can get on a test is best in class + 20 seconds (same as a fail).

Where someone has a time (including line or pylon penalties, if there are any) slower than that, they are given the maximum time instead of their actual time.

The logic for this is that someone who does the test correctly shouldn't get a higher penalty than a driver who gets it wrong and has a fail, or whose car breaks during the test.

Thanks Paul that clears it up, I was confused looking at my times, I was in class A so I would have expected nearly all my times to be maximums as I was way slower than all the others in my class (no surprise there! Smile )

Further clarification !!

I forgot to say - for calculating maximums, novices are treated as being in a different class from experts, to prevent someone like yourself getting, for example, Eamonn Byrne + 20, on every test.

The fail/maximum time for a novice (or beginner, as there isn't a separate beginners' class in the Hewison), is best novice in the same class (Mini/Mini Special/sports car/large saloon) + 20.

Hope that covers everything, now !!

For full detail, MI Yearbook, Appendix 90, Articles 8.8 to 8.8.3

Awards for the Howard Wilde Memorial event -

Apologies again for not being able to hand out the awards at Mondello after the finish.

For those who were there, they were presented after the Carlow event on Sunday.

For anyone who didn't make it to Kilrush Airfield, I have pieces of Dublin Crystal for:

Eddie Peterson, Trevor Ferguson, Tom Devaney, Paul Mooney, James Mansfield, Piers MacFheorais, Mark Nugent, Niall Murray, Robert Fenlon and Shane Griffin.

Please let me know if you want to collect them, or else I can bring them to the next event.
