ENDURANCE TRIALS NEWSLETTER

Not that long now to the first Endurance Trial of 2018, the ALMC Spring Lanes Endurance Trial event on Saturday, 24th February. Preparations are well in hand, with the necessary selectives chosen.
We have two completely new selectives, as well as one old one which is run in this direction for the first time; the rest have not been used for several years. The first few will be in Luttrellstown, then we go out the country to 5 more (4 on tarmac and 1 on gravel). Back to Luttrellstown for two more before the lunch break, followed by a repeat of the morning country loop before returning to Luttrellstown for two selectives in darkness. The finish and prizegiving will be in Luttrellstown, where the 2017 Championship awards will also be presented.

Important: Endurance Trial Introduction Night and Demo Selective - 8 p.m. 17th January @ Luttrellstown Hotel and Golf Club!

By kind permission of Luttrellstown Hotel and Golf Club, ALMC will host an ‘Introduction to Endurance Trials’ on Wednesday 17th January, starting at 8 p.m. The evening will consist of a number of talks by experienced drivers, navigators and car preparation experts. For those who want to experience a selective, there will be the opportunity to drive 3.0 KM of one of the Luttrellstown selectives, at speeds controlled by ALMC members. (Unless the roads are damaged by heavy rain between now and then, they should be passable in a road car without a sump-guard). People can then return to the clubjouse for a question & answer session. Please note – this is intended for newcomers, so any old hands hoping for a sneaky practice will be disappointed – they won’t be allowed out and anyway, it will be in the ‘wrong’ direction!

As this is a first, we have no idea of how many will attend, so we must have notice of those who intend to participate, as the hotel will need to know numbers for catering. There is no charge for attending. Please, please let as many of your fellow petrol heads know of this unprecedented opportunity. We particularly want complete beginners to attend and the evening is directed at them, although all are welcome, especially those competitors from special stage rallying who want affordable fun.
Anyone who would like to attend can let me know by email to naps@indigo.ie

OTHER NEWS:
The tyre regulations remain unchanged for 2018, as there is little support for a control tyre.
I have continued to press MI on several points, particularly in relation to allowing advertising on cars and incorporating the features of Lanes events which make them so popular.
The championship regulations will be produced very shortly. One question to be decided is whether or not we have a round in the North. If not, 4 rounds in the south is a bit meagre – we’d like your opinions on this please. As ALMC has to fund the prizes each year, there will be a championship registration charge of €5 per person, to help the club defray costs.

More details to follow!

Frank O’Donoghue.
Championship Registrar.

Endurance Trials-Some Basic Information

WHAT TYPE OF CAR CAN I USE?

Endurance Trials are broken into 7 separate classes. The emphasis is to keep costs down for prospective competitors so you will see many competitors opt for cars such as the Toyota Starlet, Nissan Micra, Fiat Cinquecento, Fiat Sceicento.....whatever can be bought, begged or borrowed from the small ads pages!

The maximum engine size is 1400cc however, there will be competitors with bigger engined cars (Vectras, MX5's, 3 Series Compacts and Ford Escorts for example) - these cars are not permitted to be classified in the overall results but will compete for their own class and more importantly they will have a great day's craic!

The classes are:

Class 1A: Cars built to Endurance Specification up to 1000cc
Class 1B: Cars built to Endurance Specification between 1001cc and 1400cc
Class 2: Navigation Trial cars up to 1400 c.c.
Class 3: Navigation Trial cars from 1401 to 2000 c.c.
Class 4: Front Wheel Drive Retro type cars.
Class 5: Rear Wheel Drive Retro type cars.
Class 6: All MX5 Cars

There are a few basic Safety Modifications required to each competing car. The below is a basic list. Please see Appendix 35 of the MI Yearbook for more information.

A reflective red warning triangle, first aid kit, tow rope and SOS/OK board must be carrried
Hi-Vis jackets for both crew members must be carried.
Full safety harnesses are mandatory for all competing cars. These can be of four point ‘Clubman’ type or the quick release ‘Aircraft’ harnesses.
Front windscreen of laminated glass.
Mud-flaps for all four wheels.

WHAT DO I NEED TO COMPETE

You will need a Motorsport Ireland Road National B licence (for Drivers) and a Rally Navigator licence (for Navigators). The form can be downloaded from the Motorsport Ireland website at http://www.motorsportireland.com/Standard-/Competitors.aspx

The Driver will need to have a valid Road Licence as you will have to travel on the public road (while obeying the rules of the road!) to get between the competitive selectives. Note-all drivers must be IRDS/BRDS registered or no start - no exceptions to this rule.

Drivers will need to be on the Irish/British Rally Drivers Scheme (IRDS/BRDS) database. This is to ensure that you have third party road insurance cover for the non-competitive elements of the event.

You should familiarise youself with the rules of Endurance Trials which are in Appendix 35 of the Motorsport Ireland Yearbook (available on www.motorsportireland.com)

You need to submit an entry for the event. Entry forms are on the ALMC Website and cost €199. Entries are flowing in already so don't delay!! The max number of starters is strictly limited to 60 crews

Delighted to say ALMC have had a fantastic response to the Endurance Trial Introduction Evening in Luttrellstown next Wednesday evening at 8 p.m., with over 27 newcomers already confirmed to attend.

We will have a more detailed Timetable/Agenda ready to go over the weekend, but all the important details for this fantastic branch of Motorsport will be covered by experienced competitors and officials. Please message the Club or contact Frank O'Donoghue at naps@indigo.ie as soon as possible if you can join us for the evening.

See www.almc.ie or our FB page for all the details about the Event itself on 24th February!

We are happy to advise that we have 31 attendees confirmed for our Introduction to Endurance Trial evening this coming Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Luttrellstown. Organised by Frank O'Donoghue, it promises to be a really concise and interesting evening for anyone that is considering starting out in Endurance Trials. Huge thanks to Frank for organising the evening, and to those that are attending to help and giving up their time. Tahnks also to the management of Luttrellstown for their permission to run through the Test Trial on the Estate.

The schedule will be as follows;

8:00 Welcome and introduction

8:15 Powerpoint presentation – with Q and A's regarding running a car and timekeeping

9:00 Anyone wanting to drive the selective is to meet in the hall.

9:45 Return from the run. Informal question & answer session with drivers, navigators and car preparation experts with Tony Phillips and Mark Reilly.

10:00 Finish up and advise attendees that a number of Endurance cars can be viewed in the car park.

Anyone wishing to attend can still contact Frank at naps@indigo.ie, and we look forward to meeting everyone there.

On a wet and blustery night, we had a fantastic turn out for the first Introduction to Endurance Trials Information night, with nearly 70 attendees, travelling from Tipperary, Wexford, Kildare and Leitrim and closer to home, from Meath and Dublin, to learn more about this branch of Motorsport, and what is needed to prepare for, and take part in, Endurance Trials.

The evening was organised by Frank O'Donoghue, who gave a Powerpoint Presentation showing all the important aspects of what is required. This was followed by a pre-arranged demo Selective around part of the Luttrellstown Estate, which will be used (in reverse) on the event itself. Everyone returned then to the Clubhouse once again, for a Q and A session, which allowed the many newcomers in attendance to ask questions, mainly about car preparation, but also about timing and on-Selective requirements.

We will post the Powerpoint Presentation, Sample Roadbook and Timecard pages, on www.almc.ie in the next couple of days, to allow budding competitors see what on-event paperwork actually looks like!

Thanks go to Frank and the staff of Luttrellstown for putting this fantastic evening together, and also to all those that travelled.

We hope to see as many of you as possible in Luttrellstown for what promises to be a great Endurance Trial!

One of the suggestions made at the Endurance Trial Introduction Night, in particular aimed at Beginners and Novices, was to have some sample documentation on the web site, to prepare them for what to expect. Just visit www.almc.ie to download full pdf versions from the Home Page of the site.
