Post Wheel & Tyre Advice Needed Reply with quote
Folks just looking for some wheel and tyre advice for this civic i'm getting ready for endurance trials. Looking through all the photo's most people seem to opt for steel over alloy but seem to have wider than std tyres fitted?

Standard car has 13" super skinny steel wheels, i was thinking 14 or 15" with fairly tall tyre profile would be good for ground clearance and help prevent punctures. Any advice on tyre brand / sizes etc?

Hi Rob, There are quite a mixture of tyres competitors run. Quite a few use a Yokohama A021R on the front, usually 185/70R13 (or 185/60R13 if the gearing is too tall) with 155 width A539 or similar on the rear. The reason behind running steel is that they can take some abuse and dent the lip etc without cracking like an alloy wheel. It's usually best to run with a 13" wheel with a higher profile tyre, keeps the costs down and you get extra bump absorption with the higher profile.

Great info, i was on the look out for some cheap and cheerful alloys, i'll probably stick with the steelies i've got and spend the few quid on some tyres instead. Good stuff!

Glad to help Rob, Murray Motorsport do a very good deal on the A021R. And for the rear any brand will do in a 155, 165 etc, so long as it doesn't have too much grip. You want a car that gives you confidence on turn-in...

Murray Motorsport A021R

Get to the upcoming Mondello Autotest for some good practice handling mixed surfaces at speed....

just been reading about it in the upcoming events section, sounds like great craic, I thought it was just a standard autotest, it sounds much more like my cup of tea! unfortunately wont have my licence renewed in time, the clutch changed or the NCT done! so will have to it it out, will try and come along for a look though

Hi Rob, As it's a singe venue event, no need for tax or NCT, so long as the vehicle appears to be capable of it. As for the MI licence, our chairman Paul Phelan (of MI) should be able to help out if needed..

We planned to call it a Multi-Venue Autotest, but being a single venue event it didn't make much sense. It's not like a normal Autotest, apart for the fact that we setup the tests to keep within the regulations...

ah stop, it sounds deadly! the biggest problem is the clutch is completely shot and i'm out of the country from tuesday to saturday so there's no way i'm gonna get everything ready in time...I do hope to be at the ALMC endurance trial, whenever it gets re-scheduled for.
By the way, assuming you're the same Piers who had the grey MX6 racecar? If so we met at quite a few trackdays years ago along with some of the Irish Performance Car guys like EVO VRS and Donal? in the red supercharged Alfa. I had the black westfield
